Approved Recovery Plan for the Tumbling Creek Cavesnail (Antrobia culveri) F 3 Missouri Ecological Services Field Office (573) 234-2132 Tumbling Creek cavesnail Antrobia culveri 1 1.2.1 Develop propagation methodologies using surrogate species Ongoing Current FY 2008 FY 2013 Other U.S. Geological Survey Work type not yet selected Contract Studies to identify the cause(s) of snail mortality in the propagation system are being undertaken by Dr. John Besser and other personnel of the USGS Columbia Environmental Research Center (CERC; Columbia Missouri) through an inter-agency agreement. CERC has extensive laboratory facilities for aquaculture and aquatic toxicology and has ongoing research efforts involving culture and toxicology of freshwater snails, including several endangered species. In addition to the surrogate snail species tested at OUL, CERC has maintained cultures of several freshwater snail species, including the Ozark springsnail, (Fontigens aldrichi), a pond snail (Lymnaea stagnalis), and a pebblesnail, Fluminicola sp.). Studies are currently ongoing. USGS scientists are continuing to conduct laboratory experiments to isolate possible cause(s) of mortality, including water sources (OUL well water, stream water from Tumbling Creek Cave, and CERC control water), components of water delivery lines, and components of culture chambers. Samples of water and/or snail tissue will be analyzed to verify potential causal agent(s) associated with mortality. USGS scientists will provide progress summaries and a final report at the end of the project period (one year after funding is received) containing summaries of the laboratory studies and recommendations for improved success of ex-situ and in-situ snail propagation systems. USGS scientists will also provide technical assistance for re-establishment of snail propagation efforts. In the upcoming year, CERC personnel will continue to work with FWS personnel in identifying appropriate surrogate species and materials for testing. Substantial progress was made by the USGS Columbia Environmental Research Center during the last reporting period related to propagation efforts and conducting water quality studies on well water that is to be used for propagation efforts. New equipment and a new pump were installed to facilitate to reinitiate propagation efforts using a surrogate species of Physa. The pump will enable stream water rather than well water to be used for propagation studies. With the new structures in place, it is now estimated that it will take another 2-3 years to complete propagation efforts. During FY2012, CERC researchers constructed a new rearing facility into Tumbling Creek Cave and initiated a culture growth study involving Physa snails. Water pumped from Tumbling Creek is being used to avoid some of the same problems encountered during initial experiments using well water. A second phase of the project was initiated in May of 2012 to determine if Physa snais will reproduced in incubation chambers installed in the cave. Results of these efforts will be used to develop propagation efforts involving a cave adapted snail before possible propagation efforts can be initiated using Antrobia culveri. The second phase of the CERC study is anticipated to be completed by Dec. 31, 2012.
Approved Recovery Plan for the Tumbling Creek Cavesnail (Antrobia culveri) F 3 Missouri Ecological Services Field Office (573) 234-2132 Tumbling Creek cavesnail Antrobia culveri 1 1.2.2 Develop a propagation plan for the species Planned FY 2007 FY 2011 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, U.S. Geological Survey, Missouri Department of Conservation, Ozark Underground Laboratory, Tumbling Creek Cavesnail Work Group and Partnership Work type not yet selected Labor type not yet selected Development of propagation plan is still underway but completion has not been possible due to other higher priorities.

Approved Recovery Plan for the Tumbling Creek Cavesnail (Antrobia culveri) F 3 Missouri Ecological Services Field Office (573) 234-2132 Tumbling Creek cavesnail Antrobia culveri 1 1.2.4 Control crayfish in stream to decrease potential depdradation on cavesnails Ongoing Current FY 2012 FY 2017 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Ozark Underground Laboratory Management: Depredation Control Species Expert In early 2012, it was determined that epigean crayfish in Tumbling Creek Cave that had migrated into the cavestream from locations south of the cave may be a source of predation on Antrobia culveri. This potential threat was not identified either at the time of listing or during the writing of the recovery plan for the species. In May of 2012, a crayfish removal program was initiated by the FWS, the Ozark Underground Laboratory at Missouri Western State University by using crayfish traps. Cavesnail numbers will continue to be monitored to determine if the removal of crayfish has a beneficial effect on cavesnail numbers. Throughout 2013, removal of crayfish continued and approximately 400+ crayfish have been removed. Additionally, stream screens were placed in Tumbling Creek to prevent migration of crayfish upstream into a refugia area occupied by the cavesnail. These efforts may be benefitting the cavesnai. A survey conducted in May of 2013 by Dr. David Ashley of Missouri Western State University yielded 4 individuals within the established transects. Although this is simply a sample size of n=1, it is very encouraging as these were the first individuals observed within established transects in a long time. A follow up survey is scheduled for sometime in the fall of 2013. As of August 2014, approximately 1300 crayfish have been removed from Tumbling Creek but the most recent survey for cavesnailis conducted in May of 2014 failed to document the presence of any crayfish within the established transects suggesting that it is likely to early to determine the success of crayfish removal related to a possible rebounding of cavesnail numbers. However, capture rates of crayfish has significantly decreased providing evidence that crayfish removal efforts have been successful in reducing crayfish numbers. Removal efforts will continue and cavesnail numbers monitored to determine the success of such actions.
