Recovery Plan for the Rock Gnome Lichen (Gymnoderna lineare) F 4 Asheville Ecological Services Field Office (828) 258-3939 Rock gnome lichen Gymnoderma lineare 2 10 Determine the effects of past and ongoing habitat disturbance Partially Complete U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, State Conservation Agencies, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Office of Endangered Species, USFWS Regional Office 4 Management: Habitat Maintenance and Manipulation, Management: Other, Research: Habitat Requirements, Research: Management Techniques, Research: Other Information Labor type not yet selected [CLWells, 6/27/2006 Although at least two populations have been closed to the public to protect the species from trampling, only one of these populations is currently being monitored, and available monitoring data (for most sites) do not pre-date the closures. This limits the ability to assess cause/effect from disturbances caused by recreational users of the rock habitats where this species occurs.]
Recovery Plan for the Rock Gnome Lichen (Gymnoderna lineare) F 4 Asheville Ecological Services Field Office (828) 258-3939 Rock gnome lichen Gymnoderma lineare 2 11 Develop techniques and reestablish populations Not Started U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, State Conservation Agencies, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Office of Endangered Species, USFWS Regional Office 4 Management: Propagation, Management: Reintroduction, Research: Propagation, Research: Reintroduction Labor type not yet selected [CLWells, 6/27/2006 Preliminary discussions with National Park Service indicate that propagation and transplant of lichens is inherently difficult, and prior attempts (with different taxa) have been largely unsuccessful. Given known difficulties and poor success rates with propagation and transplanting of lichens, the limited funds available for this type of research, and the additional populations discovered since listing, this task is currently regardced as a lower priority than securing adequate management and monitoring of existing populations.]

Recovery Plan for the Rock Gnome Lichen (Gymnoderna lineare) F 4 Asheville Ecological Services Field Office (828) 258-3939 Rock gnome lichen Gymnoderma lineare 2 8 Determine populations size and stage-class distribution Ongoing Current U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, State Conservation Agencies, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Office of Endangered Species, USFWS Regional Office 4 Research: Demographic Studies Labor type not yet selected RNR2020 - SSP continues, may add NCSU remote sensing PhD student to project. RNR2019 - A McCollough Fellow with UNCA has been monitoring GYLI sites using the Rapid Assessment Protocol developed by NPS, USFS, and FWS. Many sites have not had recent monitoring. A USGS SSP project with Clemson University studying GYLI and effectiveness of monitoring protocols should begin in Fall of 2019. [USFS and NPS have been performing quick assessments of population size and vigor on their respective lands since 2011.]

One new population has been discovered which resulted in the discontinuation of canyoneering in the area until impacts could be properly assessed. [CLWells, 6/27/2006 Systematic surveys targeting this species have not been conducted due to lack of funds (this work would require contract services using one of a handful of botanists/lichenologists familiar with the species). However, since listing, at least 14 new populations have been discovered.] The Highlands/Cashiers Land Conservancy biologists reported three new populations found in 2013.
