Surveys are conducted within the following Commonwealth Forests: Maricao, Guilarte and Toro Negro, and within Bosque del Pueblo and Bosque La Olimpia and surrounding private lands such as Finca Madre Tierra. 2018-2019: Post-hurricane surveys were conducted for both species between 2018 and 2019 by the Service and Sieve Analytics. - In 2018 the Service staff conducted post-hurricane surveys of the BWHA in Río Abajo Commonwealth Forest and surrounding lands within the karst limestone region of northcentral Puerto Rico. - In 2018 and 2019, Acoustic data (ARBIMON Acoustics Platform) were collected by Sieve Analytics and the Service to determine the presence and absence of the both species in 360 sampling sites in and around four protected areas (Río Abajo, Maricao, cayey and El Yunque National Forest). 2019-2021: Island-wide surveys of BWHAs and SSHAs conducted by The Peregrine Fund and Rainforest Connection.

Species distributions models were based on 360 sampling sites across the mountains of Puerto Rico (Luquillo – 64 sites, Cayey – 63 sites, Maricao – 102 sites, Rio Abajo - 131 sites). The models and maps were based on ~450,000 1-minute recordings. SSHA distribution models were not created due to limited detections.
