(All mice) Complete Prior to FY 1995 FY 2016 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission, National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Florida Department of Natural Resources , Alabama Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit Research: General, Management: Population Monitoring Volunteer, Species Expert, Contract, Internal Field Assistance FWS lead for ABM & CBM studies; ISU contract for ABM research;FWC lead in research on SABM & species status survey methods. FY 2012 - Ongoing occupancy monitoring of populations, particularly of Perdido Key beach mice in all three main populations (Johnson Beach, Perdido Key State Park, and Gulf State Park (AL)). For the Alabama Beach Mouse: a long term habitat monitoring at 40 points within the pre-Ivan and pre-Katrina range was done. ABM sign (tracks or burrows, or eaten seeds) was noted at all 40 sites. Thus, possibly the range of the ABM is at or equal too, pre-Ivan ranges covering all habitat types, primary, secondary, tertiary, and interior scrub. However, population levels are not at pre-Ivan levels based on data received from ITP's.

Zoologic is prearing a plan for the captive breeding pilot project with the addition of captive breeding CBM to see if feasible to breed and rentroduce captive bred mice vs wild caught mice. In the early 1980s FWS contracted with the AL Research Coop Unit at Auburn University to captive breed ABM, PKBM, and CBM. Some captive breeding was successful other were not. Some mice were reintroduced back to the wild. However, due to the high cost of lab rearing and the difficulty of obtaining adequate numbers of wild mice and reintroduction back to the wild the program was discontinued in the early 1990s. In 2007 a captive breeding feasibility meeting was held. Assessment has been made that recovery actions should not focus on captive options.

A meeting was held in 2008 with the zoos to ascertain the status of the PKBM in captivity. FWS received a grant for research to further evaluate captive options. The FFQ anticipated to be advertised in fall 2008. Contract initiated with Zoologic to plan and implement 2009/10 reintroduction of captive mice in experiment with release of translocated wild mice as a pilot project for use wiht PKBM. In 2013 The Service awarded a contract to UF to look at the genetics of wild and captive bred PKBM, also develop a captive breeding management plan and contingency plan. This will aid the Service to capturing new founders to bring into the captive population in the fall of 2013.
