Baginski et. al. (2012) found significant differences between the length to width ratios of male and female dwarf wedgemussels. Based on lab experiments, Levine et. al. (2009) concluded that propagating DWM in a laboratory environment is more difficult than it is for other mussel species in North Carolina. Tim King (USGS) and associates have been investigating the range-wide phylogeographic structure of DWM with a focus on determining the genetic relatedness of disjunct populations within the Delaware River watershed (Delaware mainstem, Neversink, and Flat Brook) and between the Delaware and the Connecticut River watershed (upper Connecticut and Ashuelot).

NC has made a concerted effort to revisit all known locations as well as other possible locations in 2011-2012. 2015 WRC has planned beaver management effort to improve Rocky Swamp habitat in NC - monitoring of that population showed severe decline. 2016-2017 - Monitoring of habitat and population in Swift Creek (Neuse); broodstock collection and captive propagation underway.
