Spotfin Chub F 4 Asheville Ecological Services Field Office (828) 258-3939 Spotfin Chub Erimonax monachus 3 1.2.1 Determine species present distribution and status Ongoing Current Prior to FY 1995 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Endangered Species Division, North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, Tennessee Valley Authority , Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency , USFWS Regional Office 4 - Atlanta, USFWS Regional Office 5, Tennessee Heritage Program, North Carolina Natural Heritage Program, Virginia Commission of Game and Inland Fisheries Research: Population Surveys, Research: Habitat Status Graduate Student, Species Expert, Contract, Internal Field Assistance According to the draft 5-Year Review (August 2014), four population clusters exist: upper Little Tennessee River system, NC; Emory River system, TN; Buffalo River, TN; and Holston/North Fork Holston River system, VA/TN. This species has been reintroduced into four streams: Abrams Creek, Tellico River, Cheoah River (lower Little Tennessee River system, NC/TN), and Shoal Creek, TN/AL. Population restoration efforts in Abrams Creek appear to have failed, since no individuals recruited there and adults have disappeared. Though habitat in the Tellico appears to be limited, amply recruitment has been observed and good numbers of the species are now observed, thus suggesting that a sustainable population may become established there. Similarly, in Cheoah River, NC, the species appears to be doing quite well after several years of stocking cultured individuals. YOY fish and males in breeding condition have recently been observed. Partners have high hopes this population will become self-sustaining as well. Efforts in Shoal Creek are still too early to assess success. Observation of young individuals demonstrates recruitment, and the species has been found several miles downstream of reintroduction sites. But it may take several more years of stocking and observations to determine if a self-sustaining population can be established. (Also see Actions 2.3 and 5). This information is more/less up-to-date as of August 2014.

Spotfin Chub F 4 Asheville Ecological Services Field Office (828) 258-3939 Spotfin Chub Erimonax monachus 3 5 Develop and implement a monitoring program Ongoing Current FY 2007 FY 2017 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Ecological Services Division, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Endangered Species Division, North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, Tennessee Valley Authority , Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency , USFWS Regional Office 4 - Atlanta, USFWS Regional Office 5, Tennessee Heritage Program, North Carolina Natural Heritage Program, Virginia Commission of Game and Inland Fisheries Research: Population Surveys, Research: Habitat Status Graduate Student, Species Expert, Contract, Internal Field Assistance In 2007. biologists with NCWRC and their partners initiated a non-invasive monitoring program in the upper Little Tennessee River system. Ten sites with SFC habitat were chosen and from 4-8 50m transects (parallel with flow) were snorkeled both up- and downstream and SFCs counted within 1m of the chain. Each successive year, an alternating 5 sites will be sampled, over a total of 11 years. Data through 2014 indicates that the species is fairly widespread in the Little T and that population levels have at least remained relatively stable if not improved in some reaches. However, high water summers in 2013 and 2014 resulted in lower numbers of fish, particularly adults. Nonetheless, biologists still believe that overall population levels are good, and the best population of the species may occur in this reach (see 5-Year Review for additional information).
Spotfin Chub F 4 Asheville Ecological Services Field Office (828) 258-3939 Spotfin Chub Erimonax monachus 3 6 Annual assessment of recovery program and modify where needed Ongoing Current Prior to FY 1995 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Endangered Species Division, The Nature Conservancy, North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, Tennessee Valley Authority , Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency , USFWS Regional Office 4 - Atlanta, USFWS Regional Office 5, Tennessee Heritage Program, North Carolina Natural Heritage Program, Virginia Commission of Game and Inland Fisheries Other: Administration Internal Administrative Once a reintroduction project appears to have failed (e.g., Abrams Creek), efforts have ceased, and priorities have shifted to other streams. However, we may be running out of stream reaches for which to reintroduce this species.
