Uncompahgre Fritillary Butterfly F 6 Western Colorado Ecological Services Field Office (970) 628-7180 Uncompahgre fritillary butterfly Boloria acrocnema 2 3.4.4.2 Monitor phenology of nectar sources Ongoing Not Current Prior to FY 1995 FY 1995 - FY 1999 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Ecological Services Division, Forest Service , Bureau Land Management , USFWS Regional Office 6 - Denver Research: Habitat Requirements Graduate Student Partially completed 1993. Correlation not yet determined but may exist. ES costs = 0.5K, BLM costs = 0.5K, FS costs = 0.5K. Nectar source selection was reexamined by a WCU grad student in 2022. UFB appear flexible regarding nectar source selection but change nectar sources as the flight season progresses targeting plants with higher sugar content. 15 species were selected for nectar sources. Plasticity in nectar sources selection may indicate ability to buffer some effect from climate change. A status of "ongoing not current" was selected because currently we have up to date information but if climate changes further it could affect species composition or timing of emergence and flowering, thus further study in the future could certainly be warranted.
Uncompahgre Fritillary Butterfly F 6 Western Colorado Ecological Services Field Office (970) 628-7180 Uncompahgre fritillary butterfly Boloria acrocnema 2 5.1 Propagate related species Not Started U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Ecological Services Division, USFWS Regional Office 6 - Denver Management: Propagation Contract Never implemented primarily due to finding more colonies in the mid-1990's to early 2000's. It is also unlikely that propagation would work well due to the UFB being an alpine species; however, a live UFB was successfully transferred in the mail for genetic analysis reasons so perhaps laboratory propagation is possible if the correct temperature and habitat is able to be maintained in a lab. With All costs are ES.

Uncompahgre Fritillary Butterfly F 6 Western Colorado Ecological Services Field Office (970) 628-7180 Uncompahgre fritillary butterfly Boloria acrocnema 2 8 Contract administration Ongoing Current Prior to FY 1995 Other U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Ecological Services Division, Forest Service , Bureau Land Management , USFWS Regional Office 6 - Denver Other: Administration Internal Administrative FS and BLM have typically been administering contract with Western Colorado University to conduct field research, monitoring, and preparation of field reports. FWS ES rarely has money to contribute. ES costs = 1K/year. BLM costs = 1K/year. FS costs = 1K/year.
Uncompahgre Fritillary Butterfly F 6 Western Colorado Ecological Services Field Office (970) 628-7180 Uncompahgre fritillary butterfly Boloria acrocnema 3 4.1 Determine disease, parasitism, predation threats Discontinued U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Ecological Services Division, Forest Service , Bureau Land Management , USFWS Regional Office 6 - Denver Research: Predation Graduate Student Some suspected minor predation by brown-capped rosy finch but no other predation, disease, or parasitism problems noticed that cause reason for research. Should disease or parasitism be suspected of reasons for declines in some or all colonies in the future we can conduct research. ES costs = 0.25K/year. BLM costs = 0.25K/year. FS costs = 0.25K/year.
Uncompahgre Fritillary Butterfly F 6 Western Colorado Ecological Services Field Office (970) 628-7180 Uncompahgre fritillary butterfly Boloria acrocnema 3 4.2 Determine livestock threats Ongoing Current FY 2009 FY 2009 Other U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Ecological Services Division, Forest Service , Bureau Land Management , USFWS Regional Office 6 - Denver Work type not yet selected Contract, Internal Administrative Some potential impacts noted on Mt. Uncompahgre from sheep grazing in 2008 and 2023, but no intensive research was conducted. A section 7 concurrence letter was issued on 12/16/2008 to the USFS telling them sheep grazing did not appear to be a threat based on stable populations of the UFB the previous several years. Nectar source impacts were noted by researchers in 2008 and 2023. Due to sheep being grazed and not trailed through the colony quickly in 2023, GMUG NF in s.7 consultation with FWS will insert in their 2024 updated Forest Plan that the sheep will avoid UFB colonies or if absolutely necessary go through the colonies but only if trailed through quickly. Furthermore, based on a recent disclosure of previously recorded UFB locations by a lepidopterist, it was found that a couple of the locations are within BLM grazing allotments. Consequently, BLM will get staff to the locations in the next couple field seasons to determine if the UFB still exists at the sites. BLM and FWS will cooperatively decide if research into historic or current grazing at the sites is warranted based on whether the UFB are still present and if grazing is overlapping and appears to be impacting the UFB and its habitat.
Uncompahgre Fritillary Butterfly F 6 Western Colorado Ecological Services Field Office (970) 628-7180 Uncompahgre fritillary butterfly Boloria acrocnema 3 4.3 Determine recreation threats Ongoing Current Prior to FY 1995 Other U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Ecological Services Division, Forest Service , Bureau Land Management , USFWS Regional Office 6 - Denver Management: Land Use Graduate Student, Contract Some impacts from hiking trails noted and trails moved; signs also erected asking people to stay on trails. Our contractor (Western Colorado University in Gunnison) submits annual reports and includes information on observed recreational impacts, which may lead to management actions as stated in first sentence. ES costs = 0.25K/year. BLM costs = 0.25K/year. FS costs = 0.25K/year.
Uncompahgre Fritillary Butterfly F 6 Western Colorado Ecological Services Field Office (970) 628-7180 Uncompahgre fritillary butterfly Boloria acrocnema 3 6.1 Reintroduce butterflies Not Started U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Ecological Services Division, Forest Service , Bureau Land Management , USFWS Regional Office 6 - Denver Management: Reintroduction Contract Never implemented due to finding more colonies. Also contingent on Redcloud or other colony sizes as sources of individuals. With some noted absences in recent years (2020-2023) at some colonies propagation and reintroduction may be back as an option. If climate change is causing changes to ALL the habitat then no amount of propagation, reintroduction, or transplanting will be successful. However, if climate change is not causing habitat changes to all suitable habitat then transplanting to suitable but currently unoccupied habitat could be feasible and prevent extinction or significant decline. (ca $1000/agency/yr).

Uncompahgre Fritillary Butterfly F 6 Western Colorado Ecological Services Field Office (970) 628-7180 Uncompahgre fritillary butterfly Boloria acrocnema 3 9 Erect signs Ongoing Current Prior to FY 1995 Other Bureau Land Management Management: Land Use Internal Administrative Forest Service completed 1993. BLM and FS have erected signs instructing people to stay on trails and informing them of sensitive nature of alpine ecosystem and rare species presence. BLM costs = 1K for FY1. New information signs were erected in 2009 and 2012 on BLM land at a cost of about $2K. Signs are currently informing people of the UFB and instructing them to stay on trails. Additionally, new signs may occasionally be needed in new places or to replace old signs, so "ongoing current" was selected as the status.
