White Wartyback Pearly Mussel F 4 Tennessee Ecological Services Field Office (931) 528-6481 White wartyback (pearlymussel) Plethobasus cicatricosus 1 1.1 Continue to utilize existing legislation and regulations to protect species and habitat Ongoing Current Prior to FY 1995 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Ecological Services Division, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Law Enforcement Division, Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Tennessee Valley Authority , Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency , USFWS Regional Office 4 - Atlanta, Tennessee Heritage Program, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service - Endangered Species Program Other: Regulations Internal Field Assistance *1. See general categories for Implementation Schedules. *2. Other agencies' responsibility would be of a cooperative nature or projects funded under a contract or grant program. In some cases contracts could be let to universities or private enterprises. *3. Note: Task costs have not been estimated for this plan. This species' present/historic distribution coincides with that of other listed species. Thus, a task aimed at this species will benefit others. Rather than attempting to apportion the costs to each species, recovery tasks will be estimated at a later date when the plans are combined on a watershed basis for implementation.
White Wartyback Pearly Mussel F 4 Tennessee Ecological Services Field Office (931) 528-6481 White wartyback (pearlymussel) Plethobasus cicatricosus 1 1.2.1 Determine species' present distribution and status Complete FY 1995 - FY 1999 FY 1995 - FY 1999 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Tennessee Valley Authority , Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency , USFWS Regional Office 4 - Atlanta, Tennessee Heritage Program, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service - Endangered Species Program Research: Population Surveys Species Expert, Internal Field Assistance Currently, the white wartyback is only known to occur in the mainstem of the Tennessee River below Pickwick Landing Dam and Wilson Dam. Young individuals collected below Wilson Dam since 1997 in Colbert and Lauderdale counties, Alabama indicate that a reproducing population of the species likely exists below that dam (Biggins personal communication, Garner personal communication). Collections of individuals in these areas represent the only recent collections of the species throughout its range.

The white wartyback is likely sensitive to habitat changes and has a low resilience to such changes as evidenced by its decline in numbers in tailwater reaches. The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) has been required (as a result of a protective measure indicated in the FWS's 2006 Routine Operations and Maintenance of TVA Water Control Structures in the Tennessee River Basin Biological Opinion to operate Wilson Dam during the summer months to provide water exchange (flush) over mussel beds between Tennessee River Mile (TRM) 259.0 and TRM 247.0 by pulsing at least one unit for an hour every four hours. TVA is currently monitoring discharge, water temperature, dissolved oxygen (at the substrate level), copper, zinc, aluminum, arsenic, manganese, ammonia and chlorine at the dam and at least three sampling stations between Wilson Dam (TRM 259.0) and the downstream end of Seven Mile Island (TRM 247.0). Sampling stations were identified in coordination with biologists from the Service field office in Daphne, Alabama.
