As of 2003, M. glabratus var. michiganensis has been elevated to the species ranks and is now classified as M. michiganensis (Posto, A.L. and L.A. Prather. 2003. The Evolutionary and Taxonomic Implications of RAPD Data on the Genetic Relationship of M. michiganensis. Systematic Botany 28(1): pp. 172-178).
