General Information
The Puerto Rican plain pigeon is a large pigeon about the size and shape of a domestic pigeon. At a distance the species appears pale blue-gray. The head, hindneck, breast, and the top central part of the folded wing are washed with a wine color. The wing coverts are margined with white. Legs and feet are dark red. A variety of fruits and seeds, and livestock feed provide nourishment for this species. Approximately 7O percent of the foods come from tree branches, and 3O percent from the ground. Principal foods at Cidra are royal palm (Roystonea borinquena); mountain immortelle (Erythrina poeppigiana); West Indies trema (Trema lamarckiana); and white prickle (Zanthoxylum martinicense). Water is usually taken from the axils of bromeliads or from water-retaining blossoms of the African tulip-tree.
