General Information
The Bliss Rapids snail (Taylorconcha serpenticola) has a very small ovoid/turbinate shell (0.08 to 0.10- inch long), with three whorls. It ccurs in two colors, pale (brown-grey) and orange forms. The average lifespan of the Bliss Rapids snail is about one year. The species is one of the few snails to survive prehistoric Lake Idaho that existed about 3.5 million years ago. Today, it resides on the sides and undersides of rocks in free-flowing and cold-water springs in the middle Snake River, Idaho. It prefers relatively clean and rocky substrates so that it can graze on algae and diatoms at night. The Bliss Rapids snail was listed on December 14, 1992 (57 FR 59244) as a threatened species. The final rule that determined threatened status for the Bliss Rapids snail indicated that the free-flowing, cool water environments required by the species were impacted by and are vulnerable to continued adverse habitat modifications; deteriorating water quality from one or more of the following: hydroelectric development, peak-loading effects from existing hydroelectric project operations; the effects of water pollution; inadequate regulatory mechanisms; and the effects from the non-native New Zealand mudsnail. A recovery plan for this and other Snake River snail species was completed on November 26, 1995. The recovery area for the Bliss Rapids Snail included the mainstem Snake River and associated tributary cold-water spring complexes between RM 547 to 585. On June 6, 2007, the Service announced that it would take a further look at the status of this snail, finding that a petition to delist the species may be warranted.
