General Information

MacFarlane's four-o'clock (mirabilis macfarlanei) is a perennial plant, with a deep-seated, thickened root and spectacular bright magenta flowers. The flowers form IN clumps of three to seven that are about 6 to 12 inches in diameter. This species typically blooms from May through June. Each flower has the potential to produce one fruit and one seed. Individual plants have been observed to live over 20 years, based on limited monitoring conducted by the Bureau of Land Management. MacFarlane's four-o'clock occurs in steep river canyon grassland habitats that are characterized by regionally warm and dry conditions. Precipitation occurs mostly as rain during winter and spring. Sites are dry and generally open, although scattered shrubs may be present, and the soils in which it resides vary from sandy to talus substrate. Thirteen populations of MacFarlane's four-o'clock are currently known. Three of these populations are found in the Snake River Canyon area (Idaho County, Idaho and Wallowa County, Oregon), seven in the Salmon River area (Idaho County, Idaho), and three in the Imnaha River area (Wallowa County, Oregon). The total geographic range of the species occupies an area of approximately 46 by 29 kilometers (29 by 18 miles).
