Abstract
Full Abstract:
The geolocated counts from 2000 to 2023 for the Waterfowl Breeding Population and Habitat Survey. There are no estimates for 2020-21.This data view presents the locations of the plane when survey species observations were made. For each observation, the social group and count is recorded along with a description of the location quality. This data view uses the geo schema as it contains geospatial information. Therefore, no CSV report is available for this data view.

Geographic Description:
Within the United States of America and Canada. The Waterfowl Breeding Population and Habitat Survey is composed of two distinct survey areas: first, the traditional area, which has been surveyed in its current design since 1974 and extends from coastal Alaska through the boreal forest to western Ontario, and through the parklands and prairies south to South Dakota; second, the eastern area, which has been surveyed since 1990 and covers portions of Ontario, Quebec, Labrador, Newfoundland, the Canadian Maritimes, and Maine.

Supplemental Information
Resource Maintenance
Frequency: annually
Supplemental Information:
For segment/day/observer combinations with no locations OR time stamps, all records with the same species and social group are summed. Assignment of the location of these records is dependent on the analysis being performed, but we recommend the segment centroid as the most appropriate point location. There are some (limited) cases where observations with the same time/location were coded to different segments. This is due to the fact that point locations do not represent the location of the birds, but instead the location where the observer pressed the button to record. When bird densities are high, observers sometimes "roll up" observations into a single location record. If this occurs near a segment boundary, observations with the same time/location could be assigned to different segments. This represents a limitation on the precision of point locations. Some segments have multiple dates in which they were flown. Our general rule is to use the first date on which flown, but this is not always the case. Males (drakes) and females (hens) of duck species can reliably be distinguished from the air while CAGO, AMCO, and SWAN cannot. CAGO are coded as single, pair, and group in order to calculate the total indicated pairs for population estimation. See the social_group definition for more information. Lone hens are not counted. The 4-letter American Ornithologists Union species alpha codes present in this data view are: ABDU = American Black Duck, AGWT = Green-winged Teal, AMCO = American Coot, AMWI = American Wigeon, BUFF = Bufflehead, BWTE = Blue-winged Teal, CAGO = Canada Goose, CANV = Canvasback, GADW = Gadwall, LTDU = Long-tailed Duck, MALL = Mallard, NOPI = Northern Pintail, NSHO = Northern Shoveler, REDH = Redhead, RNDU = Ring-necked Duck, and RUDU = Ruddy Duck. The modified USFWS species group alpha codes in this data view are: EIDE = Eider spp., GOLD = Goldeneye spp., MERG = Merganser spp., SCAU = Scaup spp., SCOT = Scoter spp., SWAN = Swan spp., and POND = Potential breeding pond.
