DESCRIPTION

This comma-separated value (CSV) file contains tidy data, cleaned from original seed head dimension and mass datasets. Field names and formats were updated to comply with the FWS NWRS Biotic Observation Minimum Specification (April 2023 version). Fields marked BOMS come from this specification and are almost all a subset of Darwin Core, see https://ecos.fws.gov/ServCat/Reference/Profile/153885 for more detail. Fields marked DWC come from Darwin Core, see https://dwc.tdwg.org/terms/.

Each row represents a single spreadsheet cell representing an individual seed head.

UPDATES

This file will not be updated unless users or refuge staff find and report transcription errors.

CONTACTS

Contact the USFWS R8 NWRS Inventory and Monitoring Program for more information about this data. This CSV and metadata were prepared by the USFWS R8 NWRS Inventory and Monitoring program in August 2024.

Columns

LIT  character

INFO The Refuge Literal Code (LIT code) where seeds were collected.

year  numeric

INFO The four-digit survey year in which seeds were collected. This file includes data for 2019, 2021, and 2023. BOMS The four-digit survey year in which this observation occurred. The survey year may differ from the calendar year. Survey year indicates the year of the start of a series of surveys, normally in autumn. This file includes data for 2019, 2021, and 2023.

NOTE A survey in March 2022 that is part of series of surveys that began in October 2021 would have year = 2021.

vernacularName  character

INFO BOMS The common or vernacular name for a taxon.

NOTES If spaces occur in the vernacularName, they are replaced with _.

bagID  character

INFO An unique identified for bag.

seedHeadID  numeric

INFO An unique identified for seed head within a bag.

mass_mg  numeric

INFO The average seed head mass of each seed head in a bag (bagMass/bagSeedHeadCount).

sh_length_mm  numeric

INFO Seed head length measured in mm.

NOTES Measurement is required for all species groups.

sh_width_mm  numeric

INFO Seed head width measured in mm.

NOTES Only required for swamp timothy and smartweed.

f2t_length_mm  numeric

INFO Seed head flag to tip length measured in mm.

NOTES Only required for watergrass.

emerged  numeric

INFO f2t_length_mm / sh_length_mm.

bagMass  numeric

INFO Total mass of all seed heads in a bag.

bagSeedHeadCount  numeric

INFO Total number of seed heads in a bag.

recordedBy  character

INFO BOMS A list of names or initials of people, groups, or organizations responsible for recording the original observation for this record.

NOTE These data are credited to USFWS staff.

observedBy  character

INFO A list of names or initials of people, groups, or organizations responsible for making the observation (i.e., measuring dimensions and mass).

NOTE These data are credited to USFWS staff.

eventDate  character

INFO BOMS The date this record or event was collected. Each unique eventID should have a matching eventDate, and vice versa.

NOTE Dates follow the ISO 8601 standard. Date the seed head samples were collected. Collection date was not recorded in 2019 and 2021.

taxonID  numeric

INFO BOMS An identifier for the taxon information for this record. It may be a synthetic global unique identifier, a reference to an external taxonomic system, or an identifier specific to this dataset.

NOTES This dataset uses ITIS TSNs.

fwsTaxonCode  numeric

INFO BOMS A taxon identifier from the FWS Taxonomy database operated by NWRS. These codes cover most levels of taxonomic hierarchy. This database includes all taxa recognized by ITIS and additional taxa added by FWS. These taxon codes are unique to the FWS

NOTES These taxon codes are matched to FWS Taxonomy.

scientificName  character

INFO BOMS The scientific name for a taxon, including authorship and date where applicable.

NOTES Whenever possible, this matches the FWS Taxonomy database or ITIS.

institutionCode  character

INFO BOMS The name or acronym that identifies the organization responsible for managing this data record. This might not be the same organization that collected, created, or processed the data.

NOTE Contains USFWS.

datasetName  character

INFO BOMS Name of the database or dataset.

NOTE This helps identify the dataset the record originally came from. Records should retain their original datasetName during aggregation.

datasetID  character

INFO BOMS A brief, unique identifier for the source dataset for this record. If this dataset is the original or authoritative source of this record, the identifier for this dataset.

NOTE This helps identify the dataset the record originally came from. Records should retain their original datasetName during aggregation.

basisOfRecord  character

INFO BOMS The nature of the observation in this record.

NOTE Follows the USFWS NWRSpecies controlled vocabulary, so every record is marked Specimen.

eventID  character

INFO BOMS A unique identifier given to each survey event6. In most cases, a survey event is a single data collection visit to a single site. An event may have many Occurrence records associated with it (one for each taxon observed or searched for).

NOTE Generated by combining the LIT, year, bagID, and vernacularName, for example: SAC_2019_SAC_2_H_M2_Swamp_Timothy

occurrenceID  character

INFO BOMS A globally unique identifier for this Occurrence – the unique combination of a taxon, a time, and a place. There may be zero, one, or many organisms observed or collected in this occurrence, but it should only include one taxon.

NOTE Generated by combining the LIT, year, vernacularName, bagID, and seedHeadID for example: SAL_2023_265_Watergrass_1.

decimalLatitude  numeric

INFO BOMS The geographic latitude (in decimal degrees, using the spatial reference system given in geodeticDatum) of the center point of refuge.

NOTES Center points are from data from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Corporate Master Table (CMT).

decimalLongitude  numeric

INFO BOMS The geographic longitude (in decimal degrees, using the spatial reference system given in geodeticDatum) of the center point of the refuge.

NOTES Center points are from data from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Corporate Master Table (CMT).

geodeticDatum  character

INFO BOMS The geodetic datum, ellipsoid, or spatial reference system (SRS) upon which the geographic coordinates given in decimalLatitude and decimalLongitude are based.

NOTES In this dataset, all locations should use D WGS 1984.
