Abstract
Full Abstract:
The Visibility Correction Factors (VCFs) from 1955 to 2024 for the Traditional Survey Area of the Waterfowl Breeding Population and Habitat Survey. This data view presents the VCF applied for a survey species in a specific stratum and year along with the standard error of the VCF. There are no VCFs for 2020-21.

Supplemental Information
Resource Maintenance
Frequency: annually
Supplemental Information:
The survey was not flown in 2020 or 2021. In the prairie region of the traditional survey area, aerial waterfowl counts are corrected annually for visibility bias by conducting ground counts along a subsample of survey segments. Pre-determined air-ground segments are systematically located throughout each stratum to represent the varying habitat and wetland conditions of the area. The ground counts of both ponds and waterfowl are assumed correct and visibility correction factors are determined by comparing ground counts to aerial counts along the air-ground segments. Similar to the aerial crew, the ground crew also counts waterfowl on both sides of the transect. As a result, VCFs can be determined for both the pilot and observer. To calculate VCFs for each species, the pilot and observer counts are summed and compared to the ground counts on both sides of the segment. For the aerial data, only observers count ponds. All air-ground data is pooled from all strata within the crew area to reduce the variance associated with small sample sizes. If needed, data for some species may be pooled among years as needed, to reduce variability. Please note: the same Visibility Correction Factor (VCF) is applied to multiple strata in each year, depending on the survey species. Some VCFs are replicated over years, meaning that not each year has a unique VCF for a survey species. The 4-letter American Ornithologists Union species alpha codes present in this data view are: ABDU = American Black Duck, AGWT = Green-winged Teal, AMCO = American Coot, AMWI = American Wigeon, BUFF = Bufflehead, BWTE = Blue-winged Teal, CAGO = Canada Goose, CANV = Canvasback, GADW = Gadwall, MALL = Mallard, NOPI = Northern Pintail, NSHO = Northern Shoveler, REDH = Redhead, RNDU = Ring-necked Duck, and RUDU = Ruddy Duck. The modified USFWS species group alpha codes in this data view are: GOLD = Goldeneye spp., MERG = Merganser spp., SCAU = Scaup spp., and POND = Potential breeding pond.
