Abstract
Full Abstract:
The species or species group Traditional Survey Area stratum estimates from the Waterfowl Breeding Population and Habitat Survey for 1955 to 2024. There are no estimates for 2020-21. Estimates are for the Traditional Survey Area which covers strata 1-18, 20-50, and 75-77. There are no 0 records in this data view because if a species is not seen in a stratum, an estimate is not produced for that stratum.

Purpose, Usage, and Limitations
Purpose:
The primary purpose is to provide information on spring population size and trajectory for certain North American duck species. These data are used extensively in the annual establishment of hunting regulations in the United States and Canada and provide long-term time series important in researching bird-environment relationships critical to effective conservation planning for waterfowl.

Supplemental Information:
The survey was not flown in 2020 or 2021. Estimates are calculated using a design-based ratio estimator for species density, multiplied by a visibility correction factor and stratum area in square miles (Smith GW., 1995. A Critical Review of the Aerial and Ground Surveys of Breeding Waterfowl in North America. Biological Science Report 5. National Biological Service, https://ecos.fws.gov/ServCat/Reference/Profile/140756, ServCat reference code: 140756). Not all strata were flown in all years, particularly in the early years of the survey (1955-65). The 4-letter American Ornithologists Union species alpha codes present in this data view are: ABDU = American Black Duck, AGWT = Green-winged Teal, AMCO = American Coot, AMWI = American Wigeon, BUFF = Bufflehead, BWTE = Blue-winged Teal, CAGO = Canada Goose, CANV = Canvasback, GADW = Gadwall, MALL = Mallard, NOPI = Northern Pintail, NSHO = Northern Shoveler, REDH = Redhead, RNDU = Ring-necked Duck, and RUDU = Ruddy Duck. The modified USFWS species group alpha codes in this data view are: GOLD = Goldeneye spp., MERG = Merganser spp., SCAU = Scaup spp., SWAN = Swan spp., and POND = Potential breeding pond. There were estimates for EIDE = Eider spp., LTDU = Long-tailed Duck, and SCOT = Scoter spp. during the early years of the survey but those are no longer calculated and have been removed from the stratum estimates. POND is only recorded in strata 26-49 and 75-76. Standard error is NULL when there is a sample size of one transect. These estimates can be cited using the following reference: https://ecos.fws.gov/ServCat/Reference/Profile/136318 (ServCat reference code: 136318).
