General Information
Korthalsella degeneri, a member of the Santalaceae (sandalwood) family, is a parasitic herb with many-branched stems 9 to 21 cm (3.6 to 8.4 in) long, with the central stem usually not obvious past the first internode. Stems arise distichously (in two opposite rows in the same plane). Stems are cylindrical for two to three internodes, otherwise flattened throughout, 10 to 13 mm (0.4 to 0.5 in) long, 2 to 4 mm (0.08 to 0.2 in) wide. Axils (the point between stem and branch) are also distichous. Flower groups are confined to the axils. Plants are observed to be parasitic on native Nestegis (olopua) and Sapindus (lonomea) trees.» Range Information

Habitat Requirements
Korthalsella degeneri occurs in dry mixed native-alien forest, at 305 to 366 m (1,000 to 1,200 ft) in the Waianae mountains of Oahu, with the host plants Nestegis and Sapindus and the associated native tree species Psydrax odorata (alahee) and Diospyros sandwicensis (lama).
Movement / Home Range
Korthalsella degeneri Known only from the Waianae mountains of Oahu.
Other
This taxon is maintained because of the distinctive features of cylindrical stems for 2 to 3 internodes and short internode length of 7 to 15 mm. Korthalsella degeneri is similar to specimens identified as K. rubescens from Tahiti; however, it is more robust. In addition, K. degeneri may possibly represent a form of K. platycaula with shorter internodes (occurring in Makua Valley in the Waianae mountains).
