General Information

Isodendrion pyrifolium of the Violaceae (violet) family, a shrub 0.8 to 2 m (2.6 to 6.6 ft) tall, has persistent stipules (leaflike appendages on leaves) and alternate, stalked, elliptic or sometimes lance-shaped, papery leaves that measure 2.5 to 6.5 cm (1 to 2.6 in) long and 0.8 to 3.2 cm (0.3 to 1.3 in) wide. Habitat Requirements

Isodendrion pyrifolium occurs in dry to mesic forests at low elevations. This species was formerly associated predominantly with native plants such as Psydrax odorata (alahee), Sida fallax (ilima), Santalum (sandalwood, iliahi), Myoporum sandwicense (naio), Sophora chrysophylla (mamane), and Waltheria indica (uhaloa).

Movement / Home Range

Historically, Isodendrion pyrifolium occurred at unspecified localities on Niihau, Molokai, and Lanai, as well as on Oahu in the central portion of the Waianae mountains; on Maui in the northeastern to southwestern regions of the west Maui mountains; and on the island of Hawaii at the western base of Hualalai. Isodendrion pyrifolium had not been collected since 1870 and was presumed extinct. However, in 1991, four plants were found on Hawaii at Kealakehe near Kona on State-owned land being developed for residential housing and a high school.

Reproductive Strategy

After sufficient rains, the plants produce flowers with seeds ripening 1 to 2 months later.

Other

Isodendrion pyrifolium differs from others in this endemic Hawaiian genus by its slightly smaller, greenish-yellow flowers and by the presence of hairs on the stipule midribs and leaf veins.
