General Information

Lobelia monostachya, a member of the Campanulaceae (bellflower) family, is a prostrate woody shrub with stems 15 to 25 cm (6 to 10 in) long. The leaves are stalkless, linear, hairless, 7 to 15 cm (2.8 to 6 in) long, and 0.4 to 0.7 cm (0.2 to 0.3 in) wide. The flowering stalk is unbranched. The corolla is pale magenta, 15 to 18 mm (0.6 to 0.7 in) long, and approximately 5 mm (0.2 in) wide. The lobes of the corolla overlap spirally.

Habitat Requirements

This species occurs on steep, sparsely vegetated cliffs in mesic shrubland at an elevation of about 290 m (950 ft). Associated plant taxa include Artemisia sp. (ahinahina), Carex meyenii, Psilotum nudum (moa), and Eragrostis sp. (kawelu).

Movement / Home Range

Historically, Lobelia monostachya was known only from the Koolau Mountains of Oahu and had not been seen since its original discovery in the 1800’s in Niu Valley and in the 1920’s in Manoa Valley. In 1994, one individual was discovered in a previously unknown location in Wailupe Valley, Oahu.

Reproductive Strategy

This species has been observed in flower in May and June.

The species is distinguished from others in the genus by the narrow, linear leaves without stalks and the short pink flowers.
