The 2008 mark/recapture survey done by the NH Fish and Game Dept. showed an increase in the wild Karner blue population first flight and increase in habitat use second flight. The population was reported as increasing in 2010. In 2012 MRR surveys showed that the number of first brood KBBs marked was the second highest on record however the number of second brood KBBs marked was not as high as other years indicating a possible negative response to hot and droughty conditions.
Recovery Plan for the Karner Blue Butterfly F 3 Green Bay Ecological Services Field Office (920) 866-1717 Karner blue butterfly Lycaeides melissa samuelis 1 1.12 Survey for new and monitor existing subpopulations in Minnesota. Ongoing Not Current FY 2000 - FY 2004 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Ecological Services Division, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Management: General Contract Monitor existing pops and restored habitats at Whitewater WMA. Trend monitoring is generally done annually. In 2008, a more extensive survey indicated Kbbs present in only one valley - Cuthrell Valley - with an overall population estimated to be about 80-160 second brood adults (James Bess, Otis Enterprises, 2009 Report). At least 5 females were seen in Cuthrell Valley in 2009; no surveys were conducted in 2010. In 2012 a thorough survey of Whitewater WMA was made for Kbbs; by Dean Hansen; none were found; Kbbs may be extirpated from MN.

Surveys on-going at Kbb recovery sites on MI DNR lands (Allegan and Flat River State Game Areas) and Huron-Manistee NF lands, as well as other sites. Kbb monitoring work in 2012 indicates that most Kbb sites in MI were adversely affected by reduced snow cover, warm spring, harder freezes after warm up and droughty conditions during the first and second Kbb flights, likely leading to lower numbers in Kbbs in 2012.

In 2010 the USGS and Univ of Notre Dame (IN) started a 4- year research project to assess the effects of climate change on the Kbb. Much of the field work is being done at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. Preliminary results indicate that increasing temperatures iwill adversely affect the Kbb and will result in third and possibly fourth adult broods in the same year. During 2010-2012, Kbb wing clip samples for genetics analyses were collected from most of the Kbb recovery sites across the range as part of the study. Also a vulnerability assessment conducted by Olivia LeDee (UW-Madison) found that climate change could cause increases in KBB larval and adult mortality (WICCI 2011, Wildlife Working Group Report).

The Saratoga Sandplains metapopulation reached a high of 17,718-25,312 Kbbs in 2010 and decreased in 2011; preliminary data from 2012 indicates the population may be similar to that of 2011. In 2010, the Albany Pine Bush (APB) population was between 450-650 Kbbs in 10 fragmented subpopulations. In 2011 the APB population was the highest ever recorded, about 2,182 butterflies and an additional 1,715 captive-raised butterflies were released here. In 2010, the Saratoga West metapopulation was 1450-2050 Kbbs; preliminary data from 2012 indicates very low numbers.
Recovery Plan for the Karner Blue Butterfly F 3 Green Bay Ecological Services Field Office (920) 866-1717 Karner blue butterfly Lycaeides melissa samuelis 2 1.15 Monitor population trends, habitat and distribution in Indiana Ongoing Not Current FY 2000 - FY 2004 Other U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Ecological Services Division, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, The Nature Conservancy, Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Management: Population Monitoring Internal Field Assistance Populations are being monitored annually at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and periodically at a subset of the West Gary sites. Generally Kbb populations have shown a long term decline in IN. In 2012 severe drought resulted in decreased Kbb numbers. In West Gary in 2012, surveys were conducted at 3 sites; all showed declines and at one site (Tolleston Ridges) no Kbbs were found. Higher numbers of a native moth larva (Uresiphita reversalis) were seen on lupine plants in IN and WI (at Fort McCoy) in 2012; this species should be watched as a possible threat.
Recovery Plan for the Karner Blue Butterfly F 3 Green Bay Ecological Services Field Office (920) 866-1717 Karner blue butterfly Lycaeides melissa samuelis 2 1.16 Monitor population trends, habitat and distribution in Wisconsin Ongoing Current FY 2000 - FY 2004 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Ecological Services Division, National Wildlife Refuges (Necedah or Great Bay NWR), Department of Defense (Fort McCoy and/or Air National Guard Hardwood Range), Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Management: Population Monitoring Contract, Internal Field Assistance Search for recovery sites in the Yellow River Focus Area of Glacial Lake Wisconsin RU-P3. Necedah NWR occassionally conducts surveys in this area. Kbb recovery populations are monitored on state lands and at Fort McCoy , Hardwood Range ANG, and Necedah NWR. By 2011, three Kbb metapopulations (Fort McCoy North Post and South Post and Necedah NWR) had meet the delisting criteria. Another 5 sites in WI are within 1 to 4 years of meeting the reclassification goals for population size. A potential threat observed at Fort McCoy in 2012 was the Genista broom moth (Uresiphita reversalis) larvae found on lupine plants (also observed in IN in 2012). Severe drought at many WI sites in 2012 (including Fort McCoy) likely resulted in lower numbers of Kbbs than seen in 2011 which was a good Kbb year.

Thousands of captive reared Kbbs have been released at sites in the nw Ohio oak barrens. In 2009, the Toledo Zoo opened a new Butterfly Conservation Center that could accommodate rearing of about 2,000 KBB eggs. In 2010 as Kbbs are occupying more sites (4 of 5), the population is considered increasing (Kbbs are no longer present at the first reintroduction site -Kitty Todd proper). In 2010, 1,435 adults were released at 2 sites. In 2011, 1205 total Kbbs were released Campbell Prairie (Metroparks of the Toledo Area – Oak Openings Preserve) and Meilke Road Savanna (ODNR site). In 2012, 259 Kbbs were released at the Meilke Road Savanna. Kbb surveys were conducted at Meilke Road Savanna in 2012 with 137 observations made; ATV use is a threat at this site.

Gene flow between the KBB and L. melissa is low and is comparable to gene flow between L. melissa and L. idas.
