Recovery Plan for the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Passerines F 1 Pacific Islands Fish and Wildlife Office (808) 792-9400 Nihoa millerbird (old world warbler) Acrocephalus familiaris kingi 2 41 Monitor populations of all three bird species annually Ongoing Current FY 1995 - FY 1999 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service U.S. Geological Survey, Biological Resources Division, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Endangered Species Division, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service National Wildlife Refuge System Research: Population Surveys Species Expert, Internal Technical Assistance, Internal Field Assistance Included in Refuge Operations and Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument Management Plan. Monitoring is annual at Laysan and has been annual or 2x each year at Nihoa since 2006. Pearl and Hermes Reef are surveyed opportunistically. Survey methods currently in use are time and labor intensive yet do not yield data adequate for estimating population size or trend with any confidence. USFWS and USGS collaboratively funded and implemented development of new monitoring methods for all three passerines; pilot data for this effort collected for 3 years on Nihoa. Revised monitoring method (VCP) chosen based on USGS analysis and group discussions. sequestaration may impact ability to monitor the populations of the 3 species, especially Nihoa birds.
Recovery Plan for the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Passerines F 1 Pacific Islands Fish and Wildlife Office (808) 792-9400 Nihoa millerbird (old world warbler) Acrocephalus familiaris kingi 2 42 Monitor habitat annually Ongoing Current FY 2006 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Endangered Species Division, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service National Wildlife Refuge System Research: Habitat Status Volunteer, Graduate Student, Species Expert, Internal Technical Assistance, Internal Field Assistance Monitoring is annual only at Laysan Island; populations on Nihoa Island and Pearl and Hermes Reef are surveyed opportunistically. A new project was initiated in 2006 to study habitat and other ecological requirements for the Nihoa Millerbird to provide a foundation for translocation planning. Preliminary work was conducted on Nihoa and Laysan; an intensive study took place in 2007 and we are awaiting results (M.Sc. thesis). Nihoa's habitat is monitored qualitatively on each trip to the island (at least once annually), and significant changes are noted. Removal of invasive plants incorporated into Nihoa trips. Sequestration may impact ability to monitor on all islands.
