Ongoing Current Prior to FY 1995 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Endangered Species Division Management: Reintroduction Contract FWS has worked together with a group of interested parties including BLM, Dr. Gottlieb, Oregon departmet of Agriculture, Oregon State University, and Malheur National Wildlife Refuge to select a site to introduce an additional population of STMA in the wild. In 1986 Davidson references potential sites at Double O, near Fields, Denio, and Mickey Dunes where S.exigua is present. The current working group has suggested that the desigated ACEC is the best location for restoration.

Stephanomeria malheurensis (Malheur Wire-lettuce) Recovery Plan F 1 Oregon Fish and Wildlife Office (503) 231-6179 Malheur wire-lettuce Stephanomeria malheurensis 3 516 Determine seed viability. Ongoing Current Prior to FY 1995 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Endangered Species Division Research: Propagation Contract Started in 1988. Early studies determined viability of stored seeds was high (almost 100%). Earliest seed collection dates recorded at BBG is 1983. Seed obtained for restoration work in 2007 demonstrated low viability, probably due to the long period of storage. ODA obtained seed from other researchers and found high viability of more recently grown out seed. It appears the seed does not remain viable in storage for indefinite periods. Continued bulking of stored seed should be conducted periodically to assure viability.
Stephanomeria malheurensis (Malheur Wire-lettuce) Recovery Plan F 1 Oregon Fish and Wildlife Office (503) 231-6179 Malheur wire-lettuce Stephanomeria malheurensis 3 52 Identify suitable sites for reestablishment. Complete FY 2007 FY 2013 Other U.S. Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Endangered Species Division Management: Reintroduction Contract On June 7, 2006 a review of potential sites was initiated. Sites within the type locality were observed, as well as a potential site for introduction of an additional population. In Spring of 2007 approximately 450 seedlings were planted. Mortality of transplants was high and success has not been thoroughly assesd at this date (09/06/2007). The working group decided that there is ample habitat at the designated ACEC and would be more consistent with teh recovery plan. Sites should be planted within the ACEC fenced area.
