Owens Basin Wetland and Aquatic Species Recovery Plan, Inyo and Mono Counties, California F 8 Reno Fish and Wildlife Office (775) 861-6300 Fish Slough milk-vetch Astragalus lentiginosus var. piscinensis 2 2.1.1 Control non-native species from Fish Slough/build fish barriers Ongoing Current FY 1995 - FY 1999 Other U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Endangered Species Division, California Department of Fish and Game, U.S. Forest Service Management: Predator and Competitor Control Internal Technical Assistance, Internal Field Assistance, Internal Administrative This action (i.e., control non-native species) will likely occur indefinitely because of repeated, illegal introductions of non-native predators. Currently, there are no Owens tui chub in Fish Slough. The only invasive species that would affect milk-vetch is perennial pepperweed, which is being monitored and treated as needed.
Owens Basin Wetland and Aquatic Species Recovery Plan, Inyo and Mono Counties, California F 8 Reno Fish and Wildlife Office (775) 861-6300 Fish Slough milk-vetch Astragalus lentiginosus var. piscinensis 2 2.1.3 Evaluate livestock grazing practices in Fish Slough Conservation Area Ongoing Current FY 2000 - FY 2004 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service U.S. Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Endangered Species Division, California Department of Fish and Game Management: Planning Internal Technical Assistance, Internal Field Assistance, Internal Administrative Livestock grazing has been excluded on BLM lands within the Fish Slough ACEC and from within designated critical habitat for the Fish Slough milk-vetch. LADWP and the cattle grazing lessee have been working on a grazing plan which is currently near completion. Grazing is excluded during the majority of the flowering period for the milk-vetch and does not occur at all where most of the population is located.
Owens Basin Wetland and Aquatic Species Recovery Plan, Inyo and Mono Counties, California F 8 Reno Fish and Wildlife Office (775) 861-6300 Fish Slough milk-vetch Astragalus lentiginosus var. piscinensis 2 2.1.4 Identify and restore or enhance potentially suitable habitat Ongoing Current FY 2000 - FY 2004 Other U.S. Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Endangered Species Division, California Department of Fish and Game Management: General Graduate Student, Internal Technical Assistance, Internal Field Assistance, Internal Administrative Coordinate with PVT; BLM has blocked off or closed redundant roads located within milk-vetch habitat.
Owens Basin Wetland and Aquatic Species Recovery Plan, Inyo and Mono Counties, California F 8 Reno Fish and Wildlife Office (775) 861-6300 Fish Slough milk-vetch Astragalus lentiginosus var. piscinensis 2 2.1.5 Control off-road vehicles in Fish Slough Conservation Area Ongoing Current FY 2000 - FY 2004 Other U.S. Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Endangered Species Division, California Department of Fish and Game Management: Land Use, Other: Law Enforcement Internal Field Assistance, Internal Administrative In the past, the Fish Slough Volunteer Patrol checks for these problems once a week, along with conducting routine maintenance. They also distributed information to visitors and generally provided a management presence to augment the agencies'. However, this volunteer patrol is not currently operating. BLM has completed a detailed vehicle route inventory as a baseline for allowing no new routes to develop via off-road use and has closed or re-routed routes that impacted sensitive resources. Monitoring, enforcement, and community outreach must be ongoing. An increased management presence would help deter further problems.
Owens Basin Wetland and Aquatic Species Recovery Plan, Inyo and Mono Counties, California F 8 Reno Fish and Wildlife Office (775) 861-6300 Fish Slough milk-vetch Astragalus lentiginosus var. piscinensis 2 2.1.6 Protect spring discharge Fish Slough Conservation Area Ongoing Not Current FY 1995 - FY 1999 Other U.S. Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Endangered Species Division, California Department of Fish and Game Management: Habitat Maintenance and Manipulation Internal Technical Assistance, Internal Field Assistance, Internal Administrative Coordinate with PVT. There is monitoring of spring discharge but it may be affected by groundwater pumping in Chalfant Valley/Hammil Valley. BLM has funded research to see if it can determine where the water comes from.
