Thirteen Plant Taxa from the Northern Channel Islands Recovery Plan F 8 Ventura Fish and Wildlife Office (805) 644-1766 Island bedstraw Galium buxifolium 1 1.2 Minimize the threats from invasive, nonnative plants. Ongoing Current FY 2006 Other Santa Catalina Island Conservancy, National Park Service, The Nature Conservancy Management: Habitat Maintenance and Manipulation Species Expert 1. NPS has established a program to map, monitor, and remove nonnative plants on their lands. 2. Santa Cruz Island Native Plant Restoration Project implemented removal of nonnative trees and weeds with grants from NFWF and PFWP. (CR 11/2005) 3. False brome is currently being managed on Santa Rosa Island within East Point population of Hoffmann's gilia. Brome has not been completely eradicated, additional managment possibly needed (CM 8/2011) 4. FWS funding being allocated to remove invasives around remote pops. of helianthemum greenei (DS 07/2010). 5. False Brome eradication effort for Hoffmann's gilia is suspended; perpetual management of the invasive species is required and funding is not currently available (CD 7/2013). 6. USGS Mapped encroachment of Vinca major population encroachment (on Galium buxifolium); populations have rebounded since Vinca removal began (AJA 8/2015). 8. In 2014, USGS mapped the invasive grass Brachypodium distachyon at the Abalone Rocks population of Hoffmann's gilia, and scoped further control treatments. They surveyed 3.63 ha including and surrounding previously known locations, found 0.30 ha infested (CD 08/2015) KGN 20190830: General invasive plant control continues, especially on TNC property, where remote infestations are targeted, and on NPS land at Scorpion/Smugglers. CIES plantings for seabird restoration are routinely weeded on SBI, EAI, and Scorpion rock. There are currently no programs that target invasives removal/control at listed plant sites. KGN 20210831: Confirmed with NPS that there is no, and has never been, a Weed Management Plan developed for Channel Islands National Park. The plant to develop one starting this calendar year. KGN 20220831. The Nature Conservancy on Santa Cruz Island maintains an annual program of roadside weed control to prevent the spread of weeds within the island, but this does not target the bulk of the weeds that may be adjacent to those work areas. They also support annual helicopter work to control limited populations in remote areas. The lack of effective invasives control on NPS Santa Rosa Island can be seen in expansion of kikuyu grass along the roads, and increasing fennel. KGN 20230825. TNC work on Santa Cruz Island remains the same. NPS still does not have effective weed control. Torilis arvensis and Brachypodium distachyon increasing on both Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa islands.

Thirteen Plant Taxa from the Northern Channel Islands Recovery Plan F 8 Ventura Fish and Wildlife Office (805) 644-1766 Island bedstraw Galium buxifolium 1 6.1 Collect seed and/or cuttings for reintroduction efforts. Ongoing Current FY 2014 Other Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden, Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, Santa Catalina Island Conservancy, U.S. Geological Survey, Biological Resources Division, National Park Service, The Nature Conservancy Research: Propagation, Research: Reintroduction Species Expert Seed collection efforts have been carried out for Arabis hoffmannii, Thysanocarpus conchuliferus, Galium buxifolium, Phacelia insularis ssp. insularis, Gilia tenuiflora ssp. hoffmannii, Malacothrix indecora, Arctostaphylos confertiflora. They plan to use the nursery to raise plants as seed stock for eventual outplanting in recovery populations of Island phacelia and Boechera hoffmannii. The timetable for raising Phacelia insularis depends upon the weather; they have been unable to collect seeds from this species during the recent drought. KGN 20190830: The seeds and living collections in sections 5.1 and 5.2 can also be potentially used for reintroduction. BOHO seed has been grown out at the sewage treatment plant (above) and used in out plantings on Santa Rosa Island. KGN 20210831: 2 recently discovered new genotypes of Malacothamnus have been collected and are being propagated for both ex-situ conservation and eventual outplanting. Thirteen Plant Taxa from the Northern Channel Islands Recovery Plan F 8 Ventura Fish and Wildlife Office (805) 644-1766 Island bedstraw Galium buxifolium 2 2 Establish and implement an inventory program for all species in the recovery plan. Ongoing Current Other Santa Catalina Island Conservancy, U.S. Geological Survey, Biological Resources Division, National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, The Nature Conservancy Work type not yet selected Labor type not yet selected BRD continued surveys on Santa Rosa and San Miguel Islands and completed in 1999. BRD surveyed Santa Cruz Island from 2002 to 2005 and will continue in 2006. In 2005, BRD and NPS conducted specific surveys for Arabis hoffmannii on Santa Rosa Island based on computer-assisted habitat models. (CR 1/2006) Surveys for Island rush-rose (Helianthemum greenei) on Santa Catalina Island ongoing. Two new populations reported July 2011 (DS 08/2011). In September 2011, new population discovered on western Santa Catalina. In April 2012 an individual HEGR observed at historical Camp Ridge Rd population on Santa Catalina. Helicopter surveys produced no new populations of HEGR on Santa Rosa or San Miguel Islands in 2011. 14 HEGR populations, around 2,000 individuals, detected on eastern SCZ (DS 07/2012). Weekly surveys ongoing, and monitoring protocol developed. At least one new population of H. greenei discovered in 2012 (DS 07/2013). KGN 20190830: While no comprehensive inventory protocol is maintained, efforts are ongoing to locate historical and new occurrences. These include: 1. NPS surveys for Dudleya traskiae on SBI (2018-2019) 2. TNC rare plant ground surveys for multiple species on SCZ (2016-2019) 3. helicopter surveys specifically for Galium and Crocanthemum on SCZ, SRI, and SMI (2016-present) 4. helicopter assissted releves on SCZ that incidentally found listed species (2015) 5. USGS mapping of Arabis on SRI (2015-2016) 6. and especially a substantial Section 6 grant to multiple partners for ground and helicopter surveys on multiple islands for multiple species (2019-ongoing). KGN 20210831: New populations of several plant species continue to be found, escecially Crocanthemum greenei, Boechera hoffmannii, Galium buxufolium, Malacothamnus fasciculatus, and Dudleya nesiotica, particularly with the Section 6 work, but also in other directed and serendipitous searches. In general there is no comprehensive monitoring of all plant species over all populations among all islands, However, monitoring is particularly good for Phacelia insularis at Carrington, Gilia tenuiflora at Abalone Rocks and Castilleja mollis on Santa Rosa Island. KGN 20220831: There are few taxa (Phacelia insularis at Carrington, Gilia tenuiflora at Abalone Rocks and Castilleja mollis on Santa Rosa Island) that are routinely annually monitored. All other taxa, especially annual plants, should be monitored annually, but are not. The result is that population and species trajectories are difficult to determine.
