Chihuahua Chub F 2 New Mexico Ecological Services Field Office (505) 346-2525 Chihuahua chub Gila nigrescens 1 124 Provide protection and enhance existing habitats Partially Complete Prior to FY 1995 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Office of Endangered Species, USFWS Regional Office 2 Acquisition Labor type not yet selected The Nature Conservancy bought 600 acres of land around the Mimbres River in 1994 which provides protection to the species. In 1995, they added 133 acres of riverine habitat to the Mimbres River Preserve, protecting more than 2 miles of chub habitat. An agreement between The Nature Conservancy and the Moreno family enabled fencing of a portion of Moreno Spring to exclude livestock. TNC entered into a Partners agreement and fenced the Moreno Tract of the Upper Mimbres River in 1998. In 2002 TNC added 9 acres to the Mimbres River Preserve. The Partners for Fish & Wildlife Program is working with new landowners on the Mimbres River to provide additional protection to stream banks (2009) 124-1 Mimbres River Restoration project that will benefit the Chihuahua chub. The Upper Mimbres River from the Wilderness Boundary to the Forest Road 150A road crossing has been impacted by historical grazing, road construction, and post-fire debris flows, resulting in several active incised reaches, head cuts, and eroded banks. This has increased erosion and sediment loads and lowered the water table, and reduced pool habitat, resulting in a decrease in dry-season refuge pools for native fish and riparian dependent vegetation with a subsequent decrease in wildlife habitat quality. Chihuahua Chub F 2 New Mexico Ecological Services Field Office (505) 346-2525 Chihuahua chub Gila nigrescens 2 122 Provide flood protection consistent with habitat need for the chub Ongoing Current FY 1995 - FY 1999 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Office of Endangered Species, Corps of Engineers, USFWS Regional Office 2 Management: Habitat Maintenance and Manipulation Contract A low water crossing was constructed on Mimbres in 1996 (date unknown). Flooding in 2005 caused some bank cutting and compromised the fish screen at Bear Canyon Reservoir. Screen was repaired, do not know who did the work.

Chihuahua Chub F 2 New Mexico Ecological Services Field Office (505) 346-2525 Chihuahua chub Gila nigrescens 3 133 Provide irrigation diversions which are consistent with chub needs Ongoing Current U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Office of Endangered Species, Corps of Engineers, USFWS Regional Office 2 Work type not yet selected Labor type not yet selected The annual establishment and constant maintenance of temporary irrigation diversions within the Mimbres River increases the silt load and degrades chub habitat. Permanent diversions that do not interfer with fish movement and do not dewater the stream were suggested in the Recovery Plan. 133-1 Evaluating a permanent diversion structure on the Mimbres River that includes a fish ladder for chihuahua chub movement. Chihuahua Chub F 2 New Mexico Ecological Services Field Office (505) 346-2525 Chihuahua chub Gila nigrescens 3 3 Determine genetic taxonomic relationships Ongoing Current U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Office of Endangered Species, USFWS Regional Office 2 Work type not yet selected Labor type not yet selected Work has started and is ongoing. 3-1 Genetic analysis suggests high conservation value of peripheral populations of Chihuahau chub (Gila nigrescens) Complete Labor type not yet selected Work type not yet selected Genetic drift is expected to be the predominant evolutionary force in small, fragmented peripheral populations, which can lead to divergent allele frequencies and lowered diversity compared to the core population. Peripheral populations are not considered a high priority for conservation for this reason. However, peripheral populations may possess unique genetic variability not found elsewhere in the species’ range, and may be especially important if core populations are at extirpation risk. Here, we characterized levels and patterns of genetic diversity at microsatellites and mtDNA for the peripheral populations of Chihuahua chub in New Mexico, and compared these results to populations in Mexico including a new locality in the Rio Yaqui basin. All populations of Chihuahua chub in New Mexico were genetically depauperate as expected due to their small and peripheral status, and harbored distinct variation compared to those in Mexico. Allele and haplotype frequencies were divergent between New Mexican and Mexican populations, and mitochondrial haplotypes were not shared between them. All New Mexican populations were significantly divergent from one another suggesting little genetic exchange. New Mexican populations also exhibited relatively small genetic effective size. Chihuahua chub in New Mexico thus represent a unique component of the species’ evolutionary legacy and hence suggests high conservation value of this peripheral population. Conservation value of this population is bolstered by the fact that Chihuahua chub has more legal protection than counterparts in Mexico. This is a published journal article.
