Sensitive Joint Vetch | F | 5 | Virginia Ecological Services Field Office (804) 693-6694 | Sensitive joint-vetch | Aeschynomene virginica | 3 | 8 | Determine the effects of seed predation | Ongoing Current | Other | Academic institutions, Region 5, Division of Ecological Services, State Conservation Agencies, The Nature Conservancy, USFWS Regional Office 4 - Ecological Services | Work type not yet selected | Contract, Graduate Student, Species Expert | Seed predation by tobacco worms and leaf herbivory have been documented on SJV, but their effects on reproduction and population dynamics are not well understood. For example, it is unknown if leaf and seed predation contribute to the boom-and-bust cycles of abundance. As described in the 2013 5-year review, research on this topic was being conducted (Griffith et al. unpublished manuscript in Service 2013) to determine if seed loss due to seed herbivory could be a reason for the large population fluctuations from year to year. Results of this 4-year study have not been published as of the date of this status review and the Service did not receive any new information about this study. For 2 populations that experienced excessive leaf herbivory and seed predation in 2022 (Manumuskin River and Powhatan Creek [VA]), surveys in 2023 indicated significant decreases in abundance | ||||||||||||
