Are they distinct subspecies? Yes. | Ongoing Current | FY 2012 | FY 2025 | National Park Service, Bureau Land Management , USFWS Regional Office 2, U.S. Department of the Army (Fort Bliss) | Bureau Land Management , National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Army (Fort Bliss), USFWS Regional Office 2 | Research: Taxonomic Studies, Research: Genetics | Contract | 2024 Porter: Porter shared preliminary phylogenetic results with BLM and FWS in 2023. Results support that Lee's and Sneed's are genetically and geographically distinct taxa. Final report is still pending. 2022 Porter: Genetic study initiated in FY2020; in progress in FY2021; final report scheduled for December 2022 (FY23). 2012 Porter results: Preliminary Report on Genetic Studies of Sneed Pincushion Cactus (12/28/2012) 2007 Baker results: https://www.fs.fed.us/rm/pubs/rmrs_p048/rmrs_p048_016_023.pdf 2000 Baker results: https://bioone.org/journals/systematic-botany/volume-25/issue-4/2666722/Morphometric-Analysis-of-Escobaria-sneedii-var-sneedii-E-sneedii-var/10.2307/2666722.pdf
Sneed/Lee Pincushion Cactus (2 spp.) | F | 2 | New Mexico Ecological Services Field Office (505) 346-2525 | Lee pincushion cactus | Coryphantha sneedii var. leei | 1 | 2b | Discover one new core population | Ongoing Current | FY 2022 | Bureau Land Management | Bureau Land Management , Forest Service , National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service | Research: Population Surveys | Contract, Internal Field Assistance, Internal Technical Assistance, Species Expert | FY22: BLM discovered a single Lee's individual/cluster approximately 58km north of the the next nearest known population. No additional individuals were detected within 100m of this newly discovered individual, which was established in anecdotally marginal habitat. Additional surveys in the area needed to investigate the abundance and extent of this species in this recently detected occupied area. FY24: SWCA identified 9 juvenile Escobaria plants and 1 multi-stemmed Lee's individual/cluster during surveys within proposed BLM Fuels treatment areas (Area 5 and Area 6). The nearest individual in Area 5 is approximately 7.6km NW of the nearest mapped individual in the Serpentine Bends population, and the individual in Area 6 is ~7km SW of the new individual discovered in 2022. On April 29 and 30, 2024, BLM and FWS biologists revisited the nine juvenile Escobaria plants in Area 5. Five of these were determined to be the species previously referred to as Escobaria vivipara var. neomexicana (hereafter, ESCVIV), three of these were determined to be Escobara sneedii var. leei (hereafter, ESCSNELEE), and the remaining plant was determined to likely be ESCSNELEE. Many mature ESCVIV plants were observed throughout Area 5, but no mature ESCSNELEE individuals were observed in the area. On June 11, 2024, BLM and NM EMNRD biologists visited the individual in Area 6 and confirmed it as a Lee's individual.
